She began to actively support and celebrate African-American heritage through songs, although as a young woman she used to avoid racial discussions and she’d been raised to think of a race as an unfit subject.
Many of her political songs have become classics and even turned her into a movement hero. One of those songs is “Mississippi Goddamn” that she wrote in protest on behalf of the civil rights movement, and Simone received quite a big support from activists; as later comedian, Dick Gregory said: ‘We all wanted to say it, and she said it. However, as soon as support came, radio stations expressed disapproval by not simply banning a song from being played, but actually sending back the records cracked in half.
